Football in ancient times

A leather ball similar to football was played during ancient times

People have played sports similar to modern football around the world since ancient times. The earliest game resembling football also known as soccer in USA was invented by Chinese Emperor Huang-Ti in 1697 BC. Records from Huang-Ti’s time describe a game played with a leather ball stuffed with animal hair and cork.

There were two teams vied to kick it through goal posts. The Japanese also played a similar sport called “kemari” in the same era. A North African game from the seventh century BC was also very similar to football, though it was a ceremonial game played as part of a fertility rite.
